Discovery that one’s child has head lice has to rank as one of the most unpleasant moments of parenthood. But it doesn’t have to be one of the hardest to deal with when one is armed with accurate and effective information on how to eradicate them.

Common head lice, or pediculus humanus capitis, are closely related to body lice. But unlike their close relatives, which can appear anywhere on the body, head lice, as the name indicates, are only found in the hair and on the scalp and sometimes in the eyebrows and lashes.

A head louse is about the size of a sesame seed. It bites the victim’s scalp in order to feed on blood. The bites can cause intense itching that is sometimes the first sign that someone is infested. The lice themselves are sometimes seen close to the scalp, or nits (lice eggs) are seen in the hair. Nits are tiny whitish/yellowish egg cases that are attached to individual hair shafts.

Head lice cannot jump. They are passed by direct contact with someone who has them, or by using an infested person’s comb, brush, etc.; by wearing their hats, helmets, or hair accessories, or by sharing towels or pillows. Having head lice does not mean you are unsanitary or practice poor hygiene. They are very common in schools where children easily pass them to each other.

For years the most popular way to remove head lice was by means of commercial chemical treatments. Some of these chemicals are not only harmful to lice, but toxic to humans as well. Because it is the mechanical removal of the lice and nits that does the most good, it is really unnecessary to take the risks associated with harsh chemical treatments. There are many natural herbal treatments that are just as effective for lice removal, like shampoos made with tea tree oil.

A nit comb is also critical in removing any eggs from the hair shafts once the live lice are killed. It is very hard to tell if nits are dead or alive, so it is best to remove them all in order to prevent further infestation. It is a laborious process to remove all of the nits from a full head of hair, to be sure, but is really the only way to ensure they do not hatch and start the whole process over again!

While most people would still want to wash any bedding used by an infested person, it is really not necessary to launder or dispose of other items like stuffed animals and other belongings like experts used to advise. Lice cannot live for more than a day without the blood they obtain from their human hosts. Very thorough vacuuming to remove any hairs from carpet and other surfaces should suffice, or, for smaller objects, a tumble in a hot clothes dryer for a half hour.

Having head lice is not fun. But with a little knowledge, some safe natural remedies, and a nit comb, they can become simply a bad memory in no time.

Head louse is a type of louse which lives and feeds in the hair of humans. There are several different kinds of lice, but head louse can be by far the most irritating. Head louse is common among children because it can be so easily spread, usually by sharing hair brushes with a person infested with lice. The head louse does not carry any disease which makes it virtually harmless, though irritating, while other lice such as body lice can carry certain types of diseases.

Home Remedies for Head Lice

For head lice use Listerine (original flavor): Another remedy for treating head lice is rubing listerine mouth wash on your head. This will kill all the lice.

Massage your head with mayonnaise and comb it after 2 hours. This will kill all the lice and their eggs. Apply a mixture of lemon and butter on your head, wait for 15 seconds and then rinse your head.

Vinegar is also useful in removing head lice. Take 3-4 tablespoon of vinegar, add 2 tablespoon of lemon juice and garlic paste. Mix it well and apply it on the scalp. Allow it to dry for 2 hours and wash it off. Do this 3-4 times a month.

Mix 2-3 tbsp of tea tree oil with ½ cup olive oil. Rub the mixture on the scalp and leave it on for 30 minutes. Wash your hair to remove the oil. To loosen the holding properties of the eggs and nits on your hair, rinse your hair with vinegar. Rinse it with hot water after 10 minutes and repeat vinegar rinse twice. Later comb your hair using lice or flea comb to remove any remaining nits.

The best home remedy for head lice is a simple fine-toothed comb! The main difficulty in eradicating lice is getting rid of the nits (lice eggs that attach themselves to hair close to the scalp). Once the live lice have been treated with anti-lice shampoo, nits must be removed to prevent a recurrence, and this is best done by combing them out of the hair with a comb with superfine tines.

Rub Vaseline on the scalp and apply on hair thoroughly. Vaseline will suffocate them, but note that it will be very difficult to wash off the Vaseline. It may need about 6 washes. You may rub some corn flour (or plain flour, maida) into the hair before washing the hair.

You can make a solution of baby oil or any other mineral oil with equal proportion of vinegar. Apply this on your hair. Once doused with this solution cover your hair for one hour before shampooing it. This may help in reducing the lice due to the inbound properties of vinegar and the oil.

It can be termed as one of the most unhygienic things we come across humans. It is more prevalent among children as they mingle around with kids in the school as well as other kids in one’s building. It is a breeding ground for the lice where too many people or kids come together. Lice have infected people of all ages and they prefer hair which is clean and not oily. Clean hair helps in creating the right environment for the eggs of the lice. It sticks to the clean hair much easily in comparison to oily hair.

It can spread very easily. Physical contact is not the only thing which promotes its breed but usage of things like comb, brush, clothes, towels, clothes by an infected person causes the spread of lice. The survival rate of lice is very good as it can remain alive without human contact for a week and that too without food. Constant itching has been the key symptom, when affected by lice. The common places where you will see these tiny things are on the scalp, neck and even above your ears. The small white eggs would have infested your hair within two days. If one person in the family gets affected be sure that you are on a cleaning mission for everyone in the family.

Some of the common measures to be taken when you are slowly and silently attacked by lice

*Avoid sharing personal items like combs, clothes and other things
*Keep checking your child’s hair for nits and lice
*Thorough cleaning of your bed linen as all members of your family would be using it at one point or the other
*Trimming ones hair is also a good way to prevent any further spread of lice, but it wont get rid of the nits or lice as you have shave your hair for that to happen
*Wash your hair and clothes once you have visited the beauty parlor

Some of the common treatments for removing lice are:

*Once through with shampooing your can use the vinegar conditioner in equal parts with water to remove the nits.
*Clean your comb very regularly or soak them in a disinfectant for better results.
*Use your regular shampoo with 3 tbsp of olive oil, 1 tsp of teas tree oil and 1 tsp of eucalyptus oil. Leave this on your hair for half-hour tightly covered and then rinse it.

These common remedies and many more can be used with proper prevention to ward off the scare of lice and its eggs.

The following article should be exactly what you have been looking for all this time.

It’s a delicate topic but there are three areas of the body where lice can infect you and each one of them requires an effort to get rid of the problem. The most well known area for lice infestation is the hair of the head because that is one that young children often come in contact with through school or some other setting where the minor is with other children who can infect an entire community. Skin lice are also not uncommon. But the delicate area that lice sometimes like to take up residency is the pubic hair. <a onClick=”javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview(’/outgoing/article_exit_link’);” href=” http://www.leasureviews.info/lice/Crab-Lice.php “>Click Here</a>

Sometimes lice of the pubic area are referred to crab lice. That is a case of misguided identity because the infection known as “crabs” is actually a mite that is just as troublesome and embarrassing to come down with. But the crab mite is dissimilar from the public lice that can also infest this area. Its good to keep things clear so you know what kind of problem you are facing and how to go aboutseeking treatment.

If you get lice in your pubic hair, there is good news and bad news. The good news is that lice in your pubic area has nothing to do with how clean you are as a person. You don’t get lice from poor bathing habits or lack of attention to hygiene in this area. The bad news is that pubic or crab lice are almost always spread through sexual activity with somebody else who has the problem. So that throws a light on who you had as a sexual activity partner. If you wish to be a good citizen, you would be doing him or her a favor to let them know you revealed the problem. The blame game can go on later. For now everyone just needs to get the problem under control.

The evidence of lice in the pubic area are the same for men or women but they might not show up right away after the night of the infection. But once the lice begin to infect your hair down there, it could get rather uncomfortable and lead to a mass of itching and unsightly sores that you will want to get attended to. The symptoms include itching, appearance of droppings of the lice in your under garments and light blue spots on your pubic skin that sometimes get red and sore. <a onClick=”javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview(’/outgoing/article_exit_link’);” href=” http://www.leasureviews.info/lice/Crab-Lice.php “>Click Here</a>

Treatment for the lice problem will always be done with an ointment or cleanser to apply to the area to defeat the lice. Some of the commercial treatments contain harsh chemicals that can irritate the skin further and sting on application, particularly if you have fresh sores from the infection. But there area also natural treatments that work just as well without the negative side effect.

Take a look at some of our other articles and dare to be educated.

If you haven’t heard of Tea Tree Oil, you are missing out. It has so many benefits that it is a must have for your home medicine chest.

What is Tea Tree Oil? Basically, it is an oil obtained by steam distillation of the leaves of Melaleuca alternifolia, a plant native to Australia.

Historically, the leaves were used as a substitute for tea, which is how tea tree oil got its name. The part used medicinally is the oil from the leaves.

The Tea Tree has a long history of traditional use. Australian aboriginals used Tea Tree leaves for healing skin cuts, burns, and infections by crushing the leaves and applying them to the affected area. The oils work as an antiseptic and antifungal due to terpenoids found naturally within the oil.

The first to recognize the unique qualities of the essential oil was a government chemist from Sydney, A. R. Penfold. In 1925 he announced the results of laboratory experiments that showed the oil was twelve times stronger than phenol (carbolic acid) which was then the universal standard for antiseptic substances. This led to further research and to the increasing use of the oil in medicine, dentistry and as a home remedy.

In 1930 a report in the Medical Journal of Australia’ commented on its non- toxicity and lack of irritancy. The report noted enthusiastically that tea-tree oil dissolved pus and left the surfaces of infected wounds clean so that its germicidal action became more effective and without any apparent damage to the tissues. ‘Dirty wounds, such as are frequently seen as the result of street accidents, may be washed or syringed out with a 10% watery lotion; the solvent properties will loosen and bring away the dirt which is usually ground in … healing will readily take place.’

In 1936 the same journal reported a very bad case of diabetic gangrene successfully treated with tea-tree oil. In 1937 it was pointed out that one of the outstanding features of the oil is that the presence of blood, pus or other organic matter actually increases the oil’s antiseptic powers by some 10 to 12 per cent.

During the Second World War tea-tree oil was issued in first aid kits to army and navy units in the tropical regions. At one point demand so outstripped supply that synthetic antiseptics had to be substituted. This, coupled with the fervent post-war interest in antibiotic drugs, led to a decline of interest in tea-tree, which persisted right up to the 1970s.

So what are the complete benefits of Tea Tree Oil? Most notoriously, people have used it for the following conditions:

    * Acne

    * Athlete’s foot

    * Dandruff

    * Vaginitis

    * Thrush

    * Periodontal disease

    * As an antiseptic

    * Boils

    * Lice

    * Eczema

    * Psoriasis

    * Yeast infection

There is dispute over whether Tea Tree Oil can be taken internally. Most packaging recommends against it, others claim in reasonable amounts it has various benefits. But taking it internally should only be by the advice of a professional.

So now you have heard of Tea Tree Oil. What are you waiting for, find some for your medicine chest.

Pediculosis , more commonly known as head lice , is one of the most common hair disorders affecting school-aged children – and one of the most infuriating for parents to deal with. This article contains information on what causes the condition, symptoms to look for and how to treat the condition effectively.

What Causes Pediculosis ?

Pediculosis occurs when the scalp is infested by small, wingless creatures known as head lice. Contrary to popular myth, head lice cannot jump from person to person. Instead, they are transmitted by close personal contact, or contact with the personal effects or clothing of, someone with the condition.

What Are Head Lice ?

Head lice are tiny, wingless creatures that feed on human blood, spending their whole life on the scalp. They are related to body lice, and more distantly to pubic lice. During their life cycle, female lice lay eggs – commonly called nits – which are attached to human hair using a glue-like substance.

How Does The Condition Present Itself?

The most common symptom is itching on or around the head area, as a result of bites from the lice. Bites may be evident high up on the back of the neck or behind the ears, particularly in long-hair individuals. Close inspection of the hair may reveal moving lice, or nits stuck to the hair shafts.

Treatment of Head Lice

A wide variety of commercially-available products and home-remedies may be used to treat the condition. Commercial preparations containing pyrethrins are usually very effective at killing the lice and eggs, as are a number of home remedies. One such method is mixing mayonnaise, vinegar and a little tea-tree oil and ‘shampooing’ the hair with this mixture. The mayonnaise suffocates the lice, while the vinegar and tea-trea oil kill the eggs. Removal of the lice and nits is also necessary. Smothering the hair with olive oil, hair conditioner or mayonnaise breaks the ‘glue’ holding the eggs to the hair shafts, making them much easier to remove.

How To Prevent Pediculosis

Many schools nowadays have a policy whereby either children with pediculosis are excluded from school or childcare settings until the condition is treated or, at the very least, that the condition must be promptly treated by parents. Outbreaks in families can be prevented from spreading by washing all bedding and towels belonging to the afflicted person. Cleaning the home area as a whole generally isn’t necessary, as lice tend to die quickly once removed from their food source.

One of the less serious but more irritating and embarrassing health problems to have is a lice infestation. Just thinking about them running around your head makes you want to start itching and scratching and, if you have lice, you know that once you’ve started on this itching and scratching, you’ll want to keep on doing it. They are a major turn-off and definitely not good for the health of your scalp.

Lice seem like such small critters that you may thing they are easy to get rid of, but think again. Sometimes, we may try all kinds of shampoos or even try with our hands to rid ourselves of them, but it just won’t work. No matter how hard we try, sometimes they just won’t budge. And besides that, they seem to breed incessantly so that there are more of them every day.

Why not explore some of these tried and tested approaches to getting rid of lice.

A brisk shampoo with a 1% permethrin or Lindane lice shampoo will thoroughly and efficient remove the nits from your scalp. Remember, though, that this can be pretty potent stuff and not recommended for children below two years old or pregnant women.

Combing or nitpicking is also effective against lice, with or without any shampoo. Use a white comb to make it easier to spot the lice. Run the comb slowly and repeatedly through your hair at least three times a day. Inspect the comb afterwards to remove adult lice and nymphs.

If you want to try one of the many natural beauty skin care products that are said to be effective against lice, heed the results of a recent study on the potency and effectiveness of anti-lice shampoos which found that the top three products against lice are (1) Head Lice Cure, (2) Lice Doctor, and (3) Head Lice Remedy.

Some hair care specialists promote shampoos that contain Neem seed extracts as potent against lice as well as shampoos that contain pure essential oils, such as tea tree and peppermint oil. A recent alternative to head lice is Nuvo lotion, which contains Cetaphil.

Head lice are a common, controversial and frustrating problem for parents. And the controversy isn’t usually about where they got infected, but instead revolves around how you are going to get rid of the lice.

On one side of the debate are the people who believe that head lice have developed resistance to regular treatments, so that they no longer work. Other experts believe that resistance is not a big problem, and treatment failures are because parents didn’t remove the nits or that the child was misdiagnosed.

Head Lice Symptoms

The main symptom of a head lice infestation is an itchy scalp from the bites of the lice. These bites can then become infected, and may appear red or crusty, and may lead to your child developing swollen lymph glands in his neck.

Diagnosis of Head Lice

In addition to having the symptoms listed above, children with head lice will have gray or reddish brown live head lice scurrying around their scalp. Lice are small, about the size of a sesame seed, and although they don’t fly or hop, they can crawl very fast, making them hard to spot.

Another sign that can help you make the diagnosis, is finding nits, or lice eggs, attached to your child’s hair. Nits are small, oval shaped and usually a yellowish-white color and are firmly attached to the side of hair shafts. If you confirm that your child does have live lice or nits, it is important that you don’t panic about your child’s head lice.

Head Lice Treatments

The main treatments for head lice usually involve using a head lice shampoo, like: Head Lice Dr, and then patiently and diligently removing nits with a lice comb. Be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions for whatever products you choose to use.

For light infestations or if you are uncomfortable using an anti-lice shampoo, you can try to simply remove the live lice and nits manually or use a full-service company that is dedicated to the detection and removal of head lice.

As there are often a lot of nits on a child and they are hard to find and remove, you may continue to find nits for days after treatment. This doesn’t mean that the treatment didn’t work. If you continue to find live lice after treating with a anti-lice shampoo then that likely does mean that it didn’t work or your child was reinfected.

Also be sure to wash your child’s clothing and bedding in hot water and vacuum to remove lice and nits from furniture, carpets, stuffed animals, etc. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, you really only have to clean “items, clothing, furniture, or carpeting that have been in contact with the head of the person with infestation in the 24 to 48 hours before treatment,” and not everything in your house though. And you can put anything that you can’t wash in a large plastic bag for a few weeks if you are really concerned that it is infested.

What You Need To Know Don’t Panic About Head Lice – Unfortunately, the first reaction for many parents in dealing with head lice is to panic. Panicking is not going to kill the head lice though and will likely lead to over-treatment and anxiety in your child who may be concerned that they have “bugs” in their hair. Nits hatch in 7 to 10 days and develop into an adult in another 7 to 10 days which can then lay more (up to 100) eggs. So it is important to remove all of the nits to break this cycle. Also, since anti-lice shampoos don’t usually kill nits, you have to usually retreat the child in 7 to 10 days to kill any newly hatched lice. Children are often misdiagnosed with head lice because they have hair casts that resemble nits, or they have dead or empty nits that are far away from the scalp. If you think your child has lice but you don’t actually see any live lice, see your Pediatrician to confirm the diagnosis. Be careful before trying ‘alternative’ treatments, like mayonaise, vaseline, olive oil or Tea tree oil. Although they are ‘natural’ treatments, they are untested, and products like mayonaise can be hard to get out of a child’s hair (dishwashing is supposed to make it easier though). Alternative medications for resistant lice might include Ovide (malathion, an insecticide), Lindane, the antibiotic Bactrim (which kills symbiotic bacteria inside the lice), Ivermectim, or using Elimite, a stronger version of Nix which is usually used to treat scabies. Viq (Benzyl Alcohol Lotion 5%) was recently approved to treat children over six months of age with head lice. Unlike other head lice shampoos which are mostly pesticides, Viq is a water-soluble gel that works to suffocate head lice. Do your homework or see your pediatrician before treating your child with multiple remedies. please visit Head Lice Dr, this is a great sources of detailed information on head lice infestations and treatments.
